Siem Reap Continues to Emerge as a Hub for Tourism Professional Skills Development, Enhancing Service Quality and Cambodia’s Competitiveness
Siem Reap Province: On 16–17 July 2026, Dr. Choub Ratana, Director of the Department of Tourism Professional Training and Secretary of the National Tourism Professional Assessment Committee, held separate working meetings with Ms. Mao Sophany, Director of the SPOONS Hospitality School, and Mr. Jerome L. HOUR, Director of Sala Baï Hotel and Restaurant School. The meetings aimed to review the progress of tourism vocational education and training (TVET) programmes and to identify strategic directions for further strengthening training quality in alignment with labour market demands and national and international standards.
The discussions focused on the following key areas:
1. SPOONS Hospitality School
The meeting reviewed the progress of training programmes in culinary arts, bakery and pastry, barista skills, and food and beverage service. Discussions also covered the qualifications and professional development of trainers, as well as preparations for the 2027 curriculum to ensure alignment with the Cambodian Qualifications Framework (CQF) and the evolving needs of the tourism industry.
In 2026, the school provided training to 80 students, including 40 female students, across programmes in food and beverage service, culinary arts, barista skills, bakery, and pastry production.
2. Sala Baï Hotel and Restaurant School
The meeting reviewed the implementation of tourism vocational training programmes aligned with the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Tourism Professionals (ASEAN MRA-TP) competency standards. Discussions also addressed the qualifications of master trainers, the development of alumni capacity-building programmes, the organisation of job fairs, and the strengthening of collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism to expand employment opportunities and enhance the quality of Cambodia’s tourism workforce.
In 2026, the school enrolled and trained a total of 148 students, including 108 female students, in front office operations, food and beverage service, culinary arts, spa, and wellness.
On the occasion, Dr. Choub Ratana commended both institutions for their continued commitment to delivering high-quality vocational education and training programmes and for producing skilled tourism professionals with strong technical competencies, professional ethics, and the ability to respond effectively to the evolving needs of the tourism industry.
He further encouraged both institutions to continue strengthening programme quality, enhancing the professional competencies of trainers, expanding partnerships with the private sector, and implementing Competency-Based Training (CBT) approaches. These efforts will help ensure that graduates possess the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to compete successfully in both the Cambodian and ASEAN labour markets.
The meetings reaffirmed the shared commitment between the Ministry of Tourism and private training institutions to advancing the quality of tourism vocational education and training in Cambodia in accordance with national and international standards, while contributing to the development of a highly skilled, competitive, and future-ready tourism workforce.
